A really good and interesting discussion. The idea of a liberal society as an end point is a useful one. We are saying that we want to keep alive the idea of open-ended possibility, and personal integrity and freedom. We're not claiming to be on the right side of history, or even that there is such a thing or for a utopian vision. One person's utopia is another's dystopia.
For some politics can become an end in itself, they become hooked on the activity which can provide meaning, comradeship or even excitement. Other's (I'm more in this category) always find something to take issue with or be discontented about. Sometimes we need to ask ourselves 'am I being helpful here' or 'am I making things worse'. We need to be eternally vigilant and I would stick my neck out and say that scepticism is a good thing but nihilism is a very bad thing.
